Fractal’s Back!

IMPORTANT UPDATE:

After listening to your concerns, we’ve decided that making customers pay again for an app they’ve already purchased is too much to ask. We’ve decided to make Fractal free on iTunes through this Friday. We’ve just made the change, so it may take a little while to propagate to your region. Thanks for your understanding and support!

After the unfortunate mess with our publisher, Fractal for the iPad is back up on the App Store, along with a bunch of bug fixes! It now runs beautifully on the iPad 1 (i.e. does not crash anymore!).

We wanted to be able to simply transfer our fans’ existing Fractal purchase records (for the Fractal under our old publisher’s name) to the current Fractal (the version released under our name). Unfortunately, that’s not possible under the App Store’s current architecture, so we were faced with a difficult pricing choice.

We’ve decided that Fractal will continue to be a paid app, though for this week (ending next Tuesday, February 21) we are reducing the price to 99 cents. After that, Fractal will return to its original price.

There are several options for previous customers.

  • One: You can simply keep your current version of Fractal; however, it will not be updated and you will not be able to reinstall it, because that version of Fractal is no longer in the App Store.
  • Two: You can repurchase Fractal at the reduced 99¢ price this week. Each purchase of will really help us out, and will allow you to reinstall and update the app in the future. We hate to ask this of our fans, but we have to try and make our plea. The circumstances that forced the removal of Fractal from the App Store to begin with have made it so that we can’t afford to offer it for free. We, more than anyone, wish things had turned out differently.
  • Three: if you still think having to repurchase the app for updates is unfair, please contact us directly and we can try and work something out.

We truly apologize for this unexpected mess. We are not trying to squeeze pennies out of our customers, we are just trying to recoup on business losses from a bad publishing deal. We’re sorry, and hope you can understand where we’re coming from. We love you guys and hope we have your continued support!

Patch Notes for Fractal v1.2.0 (iPad):

  • Performance improvements across the board, especially on iPad 1.
  • Reduced the memory footprint of the entire game.
  • Removed some assets that were no longer being used.
  • Reduced the overall CPU usage of the game.
  • Fixed a logic error that could render puzzle 53 unsolvable.
  • Fixed some bugs that unbalanced arcade mode. The difficulty curve in Run was too sharp and was knocking people out of it sooner than they should be.
  • Fixed the apparent size of some of the levels in campaign mode.

Fractal Pulled from iTunes App Store

Due to technical issues experienced with our publisher—namely that they are technically no longer our publisher—Fractal: Make Blooms Not War has been pulled from the iTunes App Store. Don’t worry, though. The situation is only temporary. Now that publishing rights have been returned to Cipher Prime, we’ll be re-releasing Fractal for the iPad under our own name. When Fractal does return to the store, it will be registered as an entirely different app and will need to be downloaded to receive the latest version and any future updates. Unfortunately, there’s no way to transfer purchases in a situation like this one. Keep your eyes posted on the blog for updates!

Last Call for the Indie Royale Bundle!

New Year Indie Royale Bundle

Fractal is included in Indie Royale’s New Year’s Bundle, but it’s the last day of the sale!

For the next 24 hours, you can purchase Fractal along with three other games: Nuclear Dawn (InterWave Studios), Max and the Magic Marker (Press Play), and Super Crossfire (Radian Games).

The Indie Royale Bundle is a fluctuating minimum price bundle, meaning that the minimum price goes up the more people that buy it! And if people pay more than the minimum price, it reduces the price for other buyers! (Also, you get a copy of George & Jonathan‘s “Beautiful Lifestyle” chiptune album!)

So grab the bundle at Indie Royale, or at least go to check out the action!

Super Indie Bundle on Steam!

Happy Holidays!  Guess what! Fractal is included in the Super Indie Bundle, an awesome holiday deal going on in the Steam Store right now! From now until January 2nd, this bundle of ten amazing games from some super cool indie studios is available for $19.99; that’s 77% off the cost of buying all ten games!

Honestly, we’re pretty honored to be a part of this group. LIMBO, from the Danish developer Playdead, is one of the most visually pleasing games we’ve ever played. Cave Story+, created by Daisuke Amaya under the Pixel alias, is an updated version of the original game that has been lauded by reviewers as a milestone game in the action-adventure genre. The bundle also includes one of Will’s favorite games, Revenge of the Titans, from Puppy Games.  Its cutesy and retro vibe belies the intensely strategic thinking it requires of the player.  All in all it’s super fun!  The team is also really into Gemini Rue; created by Josh Nuernberger and released by Wadjet Eye Games, it’s a point-and-click adventure that has some outstanding, neo-noir storytelling that really sets it apart. Overall, we couldn’t be happier with everything and hope you feel the same way!  : D

Steam Codes for Fractal Owners!

Good news! We’ve worked out the kinks with Valve, and I’m happy to announce that we’ve gotten codes for all Fractal owners to activate their copies on Steam! All you’ll need to do is:

  1. Log into your account at the Cipher Prime Store.
  2. If you haven’t already, Activate Your Copy of Fractal.
  3. In the product list, under Fractal, click Generate Serial.
  4. Launch Steam and log into your Steam account.
  5. Click the Games Menu.
  6. Choose Activate a Product on Steam…
  7. Follow the onscreen instructions to complete the process.
The Cipher Prime and Steam versions of Fractal are somewhat incompatible, so I’d recommend uninstalling Fractal first. Additionally, some people have noted that the Steam build of Fractal crashes after the resolution screen on certain Windows machines. This can be fixed if you download and install the Microsoft Visual C++ 2010 Redistributable Package (x86). We’ll be sure to get that included in the next update on Steam. Thanks for playing, everyone! Let us know if you guys run into any issues, and have a great weekend!

Fractal Blooms on Steam

We drafted it, armed it, made it say goodbye to its sweethearts, and now Fractal is all set to drop on the beaches of Steam as the vanguard of a Cipher Prime invasion!

That’s right, Fractal is our very first title on the Steam Store! It will feature all the tweaks and improvements we added to the game for our Mac Store release, including rebalanced play modes, updated graphics, and improved music and sounds.

So now that Fractal is taking advantage of the convenience of Steam, the fractal-curious out there no longer have any reason to stay in the closet. Get ready to burst out and buy our blooming beautiful game so you can get in on all the hexagon-pushing like the cool kids.

Even Edge Magazine is giving Fractal love, killahz, calling it “a creative and surprisingly prickly form of mental weeding that swiftly becomes a pleasure to lose yourself within.” Pocket Full of Apps described Fractal as a “lush music puzzler” set in “a pulsing kaleidoscopic dreamscape.”

So be sure to check it out! Beginning today. November 29. FractalSteam. PC. Mac. $6.99. No regrets. Thanks everyone!

Fractal: The Return of the Bloom.

As always, when Cipher Prime goes radio silent, it’s usually because we’re working on something awesome.

Or playing Starcraft II in a rum-and-whiskey fueled haze. Which, to be fair, is also awesome.

First, we deal with the rumours. Yes, we are working on a new title! No, I’m not telling you anything about it yet. Yes, Pulse is getting new tracks! No, you can’t hear them yet.

What I can tell you is that Fractal, in all its Unity-powered-3d-accelerated glory, is coming to your Mac via the Mac App Store and the Cipher Prime Store right the #$%! now for $6.99. As always, if you purchase directly from us, we get 100% of the proceeds!

So much has changed since Fractal originally came out I don’t even know where to begin. We’ve rebalanced Campaign mode so that you can start from any level. We rebalanced Arcade mode so that it’s fun and challenging. We’ve updated our graphics and smoothed out the engine so the game runs, crisp, clean, and beautiful — even at full-screen, 1680×1050. New drum loops, crisper strings, cleaner sounds — this Fractal is the real deal.

Now as we said before, if you already own Fractal, you will get this desktop upgrade totally gratis. Just log into your account at store.cipherprime.com and get to downloading! You can also get Iterate!, the official theme from Fractal, from our music page, for 99 cents; this also includes the contemplative reprise that appears in the menu screens.

As for Steam? It’s coming, I promise. No seriously. We are this close.

Facelift!

Check it out guys!  Cipherprime.com has been given a sparkly, new and improved makeover.  Plus, we’re trying hard to get all our sites under one umbrella for your viewing pleasure.

We’ve also added a new music page, cipherprime.bandcamp.com, hosted by Bandcamp.  All of your favorite tracks, in addition to new tracks, will be added to the music page.  Like what you hear?  Well you can purchase tracks, or a whole album if you so please, directly from the music page.  More importantly, all of our music will be rolling over to the bandcamp site and we will no longer be placing music on the store.  Don’t freak out though!  Any purchased music will still be available for download.  Remember, change is a good thing and we’re really excited about the switch.  You’ll have way more fun with this new interface and be able to purchase and listen easily now.  Also, we chose Bandcamp because it supports a lot of indie musicians and indie game soundtracks.  We’ve found tracks and musicians we really like perusing different bandcamp pages.  Some of our favorites?  Super Meat Boy and Bastion are awesome!

We also want to let you know, a new update for Pulse is coming soon and once it goes live we’ll add the new tracks.  And we’re going to be making sure there are constantly new downloads for mailing list users.  Currently, Philly is Golden can be downloaded FREE and even more free tracks will be added to the bandcamp site.  We’re throwing you another bone…Autumn (Auditorium) and Iterate! (Theme from Fractal) were once $.99 but can now be downloaded for free as well.

Lastly, our updates for Fractal have gone live!  Have you had any issues?  Please let us know if you encounter any problems or if the game isn’t available in your region.  We’ll work quickly to resolve any issues if you let us know of anything.  Otherwise, we hope you enjoy!  So thanks for tuning in and be sure to let us know how you like our new main page and bandcamp.  Comments and feedback are always welcome!
